Active compounds in pine bark
Pine bark extract is produced from pine bark via water extraction. Its primary active compound group consists of oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs. These polyphenols strengthen endothelial cells on the inner lining of blood vessels. During exertion, muscles require steady blood flow to deliver oxygen and clear metabolic byproducts like lactate. Pine bark extract supports nitric oxide production in blood vessels, maintaining capillary flexibility. This reduces tissue swelling and muscle soreness after long workouts.
Extract quality and standardization
Bark powder is not the same as a standardized extract. Plain ground bark contains abundant wood fiber but few active compounds.
- Standardization: In a quality product, the proportion of proanthocyanidins is precisely determined through laboratory testing.
- Purity: Raw material is gathered away from industrial zones and screened for heavy metals.
- Origin: The bark structure of slow-growing northern pine contains a concentrated amount of protective compounds.
Regular intake
Pine bark extract is taken in the morning or before an extended training session. Its effect on the vascular system is cumulative, with benefits appearing after a couple of weeks of consistent use. It pairs well with all standard supplements.
